January 19, 2012

hey mom!
man i'm so pumped to be almost leaving this place! as much as i love the mtc, i'm ready to leave haha. well so maybe my spanish isn't quite ready, but me personally is ready. i'm a little worried about a plane and all the security and stuff, like not afraid to fly, but just getting to the plane smoothly through security and everything. i've never done it before so i don't know what to expect! but here's the plans for the flight. we're at the travel office here and probably leave as close to 6 in the morning on monday as we can. then our flight leaves at 9:47 here, and we get to atlanta at 3:27. then we have a 2 hour lay-over, and leave atlanta at 5:55 and get to panama at 10:02 monday night. so if i count right, it's just short of 11 hours of flying total, which doesn't seem too bad, but i'm not really sure what a long flight is so we'll see how it goes :) as far as calling, i'm not a hundred percent sure i can call from salt lake, but i'm sure i can call in atlanta at least, so if you want to kinda see if i'll call at like 8 or 8:30 you can, but i'm not sure if they let you. and i can't promise a time in atlanta, but i will for sure between the lay-over, probably just the house phone. and i can actually buy phone cards here, i'm not sure how much, but i'll just get one to last for enough time, and i think they only last like 90 days after they're activated, so i'll get an hour or something, i don't know. i think i'm pretty well good though, i've been able to survive here and haven't really needed anything extra, so i can't think of something else i need, so i think i'm about ready!

bad news with elder clarke though. so we went in to the doctor on monday? ok actually a little thing with that. so we have gym at 2:15, so we were dressed and like walking out the door when they called us over the intercom and said we had to go to the doctor right now. so i was not very happy, because i live to go to gym haha, plus i had to say happy birthday to trev, and i'm sure karissa's mad that i missed her birthday, but i don't really think about the day here so you'll have to forgive me! but yeah whatever, so we had to get dressed and leave, and we were at the doctor for like 2 hours, and said there was still crap in there, so they set up a cat scan for tuesday, so we had to go do that on tuesday, and then wednesday we had to go set up an appointment for more surgery cause it wasn't what they expected, and i don't know if they've told him or me a definite answer what it is, but anyway, in like 3 hours we have to go to the doctor for surgery, and it's a 1 1/2 to 3 hour surgery, so it should be fun for me right? i'll just kinda chill and read stuff, which isn't too bad i guess. i've been reading jesus the christ, and that book just blows my mind! it's such a cool book! so i'll get some good study time in at least, on my p-day, when i should be doing nothing...haha but yeah he's gonna get delayed at least 2 weeks, which is a bummer for him, he's ready to leave too.

but things are good here. just ready to leave. a kind of weird thing is happening though. so we have fake investigators right? and we teach them everyday basically like it is in the field. but sometimes we get subs or something so we kinda just teach them once and never see them again, which i guess will probably happen a lot too. but as we're trying to get to know these "investigators," i start to feel sorry for them and really want to help them, like one of our last ones he was pretending to be this like 60 year old guy who doesn't talk to his kids anymore and feels like he can't be forgiven of the sins he's commited in the past, and the whole time i just wanted to help! and it's weird since they're not real, but everyone says you get as much out of the little teaching experiences as you put in, so i try to make it as real as possible, and it does help. so i'm pumped to get out in the field and have it all be real. i'm a little worried with the spanish, but we've had a ton of stories of just like it doesn't really matter that you can say everything you want, as long as the Spirit's there and you're just happy, people will feel that and want to know more, so i'm trying to do that since i can't communicate. and there's this quote in pmg that says something to the effect of we don't just teach so people understand, we teach so that no one can misunderstand, and i like that. it applies since i have to keep everything simple since i don't know any complicated words, so i'll just need to keep with that. but i'm pumped and can't wait to go!

so with trev, he wants to see me after gym time? but not during? cause i thought we were planning on me coming during my gym time. i guess right after would work, but i can't go too long, so if you get this maybe email again real quick so i can check again probably tomorrow and make sure.

but i think other than that i'm good to go. i do think i get to email friday and saturday, so we'll see how that goes. but yeah things are good, just need to pack and get out of this place! :) so i guess i'll talk to you on monday!

much love,

January 12, 2012

hey everyone!

things are good as always. still not much has happened, at least with me anyway. so tuesday we went back to the ENT to check out my comp's ear again, and it was still messed up, so we set up an appointment to go to the hospital yesterday morning, so the 11th at like 7 in the morning, which was a bugger, but oh well. so we went to the hospital and he had to get surgery to put some tubes in his ear, which was like a 10 minute operation. but after the operation the doctor came in to tell me how it went, and he said he got rid of all the fluid, but there was like some soft tissue or something or other that's still blocking it, and so he cut some of it out and is gonna run some tests on it, and as far as i know we have to go back next thursday to get results and stuff. so we're pretty convinced he's gonna have to be delayed since we're leaving like 4 days after his follow-up, and if he has to get more surgery, it's risky business. so we'll see how that goes.

oh and as far as i know now too, we are leaving the 23rd. cause there's this thing called in-field orientation, which is weird since we stay on campus all day, so i'm not really sure what happens there, but you have this orientation the friday before you leave, so that means we leave the 23rd, which is a bummer, but oh well. i guess it's just 2 more days to learn some spanish. it's kinda starting to freak me out that in like 11 days i will have no choice but to speak spanish all the time, there won't be any slipping in an english word here and there when i need it, so it's a little stressful. but then i am super pumped to get out of here, i'm not ready at all, at least in the spanish sense, but i'm ready to talk to real people. i'm gonna have to decide not to be scared to talking to random people, which will be hard. but i'm never gonna see any of them ever again, so why should i be scared? :)

we've been having a ton of talks about not plateauing and setting good goals for our last two weeks and stuff, so it's good. i'm trying hard to make sure i'm as ready as i can be. there really is just a lot to absorb and a lot to do, so there's no way to get it all, but i'm trying.

ok and i was thinking of buying a little jansport backpack for like 18 bucks, i guess i don't really need it, but it might be nice, but if you don't want me to i'll survive. and yeah i bought some abreva cause i had a little cold sore, but it's gone and that little tube should last me forever so that's good. and i haven't heard from gentry forever so yeah if karissa wants to help me out there that'd be great. oh and if i don't see trev for awhile, i still need to get a blessing from him, i'll probably not see him til monday, so if you maybe want to run that by him or have him find me or whatever works that'd be great.

but i think that's about it. not much is going on. just down to the wire here, learning as much as i can. i think i get to email on in-field orientation, and then the saturday the next day we get to wash our clothes one last time, so i'll get another email that day too, so i'll email proabably thursday, friday and saturday next week. hope everyone's doing well!

much love,

January 5, 2012

hey everyone!

not a lot has been happening still. i feel really bad cause i'm sure all of these emails are just boring cause nothing ever happens. really all we do is get up at 6:30, go to class at 7, eat breakfast at 7:30, have class at 8 usually for three hours, then we have an hour of personal study, then lunch, then back to class at 12:45 for more hours, then an hour of language study, then dinner at 5, then TALL at 5:45, which is just language study on the computer, then we have gym after for 50 minutes, then we plan for half an hour, then before you know it, you're waking up the next day doing it again. there are like variations, sometimes we don't have class until 12:45, but then we have 2 classes in the afternoon, or sometimes we only have one class, so we do get some variety, but not too much.

one cool little story i guess. so we have this teacher, hermano wiest, and he's a sweet guy, but one day he said some boss lady was gonna come observe him so we needed to be on our best behavior. so of course we were right? but then we had to do some practice teaching, and he stuck her with us, so she was pretending to be an investigator and we had to teach her. and we did so well, we made her cry! now who knows if she really was crying about that, but hey it was still cool! so we told our teacher we just got him a raise :) so we are getting better at teaching. we still have our struggles, mostly just cause we still can't communicate very well, but we're starting to be able to carry on a somewhat normal conversation, so it's good. it's just like putting a firehose to your mouth and trying to drink all the water, there's just so much information to take in it can be hard. but we're doing our best and getting along just fine!

yeah new year's here was really just another day. new year's eve we still had all of our classes and whatnot, no special fireside or anything. some kids did stay up til midnight, but i never really got into that, and i need to be obedient as i can because i need as much help as i can get, plus it's not worth staying up to be dead the next day. so i said happy new year at ten with the people in new york, but that's about it.

i am missing taylor though! lyce had him talk in the little tape and it was just funny. i'm sure he's a lot of fun now! but i did not know lyce got a new job! what does she do?

we had a tiny little ray of hope the other day. so a few elders in my district decided to take their suits in to get dry cleaned, and when the girl at the dry cleaning place pulled their names up, the computer says we're leaving on the 20th! so obviously it doesn't really mean much, but hey 3 days less in this place is ok with me! :) i really am just antsy to go, i want it to be real now.

i don't know if i've told you, but my comp has had a rough few weeks with his body. so first he had the ear infection, which he still has, and we have to go to the doctor again on tuesday, but like a week ago he got headbutted while playing basketball, so we got to leave again to go get some stitches. we've left campus like 5 times, and it's pretty dang exciting! we had to go to this rite-aid place to get some antibiotics, and it was so weird seeing normal people! since it's utah, everyone wants to say hi to the missionaries, so we got to talk to a few people just casually, and when you've been cooped up in one place for this long, a conversation with a normal person is exciting!

so i've also been buying a few things, like i bought this scripture marking pencil, some abreva, just some random things, but i obviously don't want to spend what little money i have saved, so do you have any advice for me there? maybe give me like monthly allowances? or just updates? whatever works. but probably before i leave i'll stock up on a few things just cause it's cheap here, so if you could let me know a little about that it'd be great.

well i think that's all i've got. i hope things are going well with everyone. tell karissa to stop slacking off in school :) and tell lyce good luck with the new job that i know nothing about :) and i see trev a ton, so i have nothing for him :) anyway things are good down here, pumped i only have like 3 weeks left! until next week!

much love,

December 29, 2011

hey everyone!

how's it going up there? things are just the same as always down here. there's really never anything to tell.

for Christmas, i kinda already did send an email, did you not get it? i thought i already said what i did? and did you get a phone call from brother monson? you must not have gotten that email, cause at about 3:30 i was emailing, so i was just inside. i did go to the temple that day though, but at like 12:45, so i guess i missed you all. that night though we just watched some more motab, which is good i guess, but we just spent like 8 hours in uncomfortable seats watching movies, so it wasn't that fun. we watched mr kreuger's christmas that night, and i don't think i've ever seen it, so it was fine i guess, but kinda weird too. thanks again for all the presents, we had some fun opening them, well i opened them, everyone else opened theirs, but you know what i mean. it's just cool thinking that now i only have one christmas left, weird huh? i guess i'll have to get use to warm christmas' too, even though i only have one, cause it was like 50 and sunny down here, it wasn't normal, it didn't feel like christmas at all, course there's not really any christmas spirit here, well at least like the santa and elves and stuff, but they put lights up, so i guess that kinda counts. it is a little crazy to think it's already been like a week after christmas, but monday was basically just a normal day, we don't get a christmas break here, so it was just right back in the swing of things. but it's all good.
i did learn a couple of cool little things. so christmas, they don't say christmas in spanish, it's just navidad, but "mas" in spanish means "more," so it's "Christ's Mass," but also "more Christ," kinda cool i thought. and a cool little lotr fact, "grima" in spanish means "fright" or "horror," so that's kinda cool as well

i'm not really surprised the jazz are blowing it, i'm not expecting them to be good this season or maybe even the next, but i do think they're gonna be dang good.

well it's a short email, but nothing has happened in the last like 3 days, so i don't have anything. i really just want to get out and do some work though, i'm sick of the "fake" stuff. obviously i still have lots to learn, but i'm not a fan of this place, plus we're here 10 weeks instead of 9, just cause we were supposed to come in on thanksgiving week, but i guess they didn't want us travelling that week or something so they pushed us back a week. but funny thing with my visa, i got a thing in the mail awhile back and they said we were just gonna be travelling on our passport alone, we didn't need a visa, so we applied for it for nothing. but they checked my immunizations and things too and i'm fine there, so i'll be able to go when they let me. my estimated departure is the 23rd, so who knows if it'll change, but i'll plan on that.

well i hope things are going well, tell everyone i said hi. and i'll talk to you next week!

much love,

December 25, 2011

!Feliz Navidad!

well i´m glad you got my message that i was writing you today...:) i guess i'll just have to make up some stuff.
it's been a pretty good few days since thursday. ok first for dad, this is probably not good, and probably not missionary appropriate, but one of the guys in my district was playing some music, and guess what it was? it was danny boy! i'm not sure what the song is called, but it goes like "we bought a six pack at the liquor store and we drank them in her car..." you know that one? it just reminded me of home so it was good.

and for trev and karissa, we had a little nativity program last night, and we sung a bunch of songs and did some other stuff, but when mary and joseph came out, mary pulled the baby out of nowhere, and it reminded me of guy on a buffalo, "cheaper than adoption" right? it was funny, but no one here has seen guy on a buffalo so i couldn't share it with anyone.

for lyce and chip, the card with taylor on it is perfect, that's definitely going up on my wall. and good on ya lyce for taking control with that tape, did i hear chip on it though...?

oh and i think you know i saw bro and sis adams, i told them to tell you hi, so i hope they did, but anyway they brought me some goodies, some candy and a bouncy ball, which will actually provide a lot of fun, but if you want to tell them thanks again for me that would be great!

Christmas Eve was good here. it was probably the first time i've really been homesick though, just cause like a few days ago trev was saying about how him and karissa were up all night and stuff, and it just made me miss stuff like that, and so i was thinking about staying up all night eating junk food and playing video games and stuff on Christmas Eve, so it was a little hard. and it's bad too since we'll probably like never do it again, i don't know, i guess we'll see, but it'll just be harder now. really the day was the same as any other day. we still had class and stuff, so no different. but at night we had a little devotional like i mentioned, and then we watched like this 80's version of a Christmas carol, and it was probably the weirdest movie i've ever seen. it had like clark c taylor or chuck or whatever his name is, if you've happened to see that movie, but i would definitely recommend against it. and then brother monson, i've mentioned him before, came over and talked to the zone, and gave everyone a little card, so that was good. he's a sweet guy though, he's the prophet's nephew, so he's super spiritual and way smart as well, but he comes in wearing skinny jeans and vans, and he's like 50 years old, so it was awesome. we also had a sleepover, well the two other elders that don't sleep in our room came over, so that was exciting i guess. we opened one present Christmas Eve, the little pez guy, but don't worry, i saved the rest for this morning. so yeah we got up this morning and we all went around one by one and opened presents and it was a lot of fun! thanks again for everything! and tell grandma bearnson thanks too, i actually was thinking i needed a good picture of Jesus so that was perfect. i also really loved the tape, it was awesome to hear from everyone! it's good to know i'm not too forgotten yet! or at least when everyone is forced to think of me they do! :) but tell everyone i appreciated it and i miss them all a ton! i hope everyone is doing awesome!  but then today we watched a little mo tab thing for like 30 minutes, then we had a sacrament meeting where elder bednar and his wife spoke. it was great! he's a funny guy actually! but i learned a lot too. i don't know how appropriate it is, but basically what i got out of it was like the greatest convert on your mission should be yourself, but if you're looking for it, you won't find it. like you don't get it because you want it, you get it because you're forgetting yourself and turning to Christ. he actually said "who cares what you want? get over yourself!" so he was super blunt, but it was good. it made me realize i have a ton to work on, so we'll see how it goes.

well that's basically all i've got for only like three days worth of stuff. thank you again for everything. i hope the tape worked, and i hope you didn't laugh too much at it :) merry christmas, i don't know how to do upside down exclamation points, or i would, but you get the idea :) i hope you all had a great Christmas! it's been good down here! thanks for all the prayers and support! talk to you on thursday!

much love,

elder paskett
